Posted by Albertine,
It’s time to replace the old lawn mower and I’m starting to search for the one I want, but there seem to be an awful lot of brands and models to choose from. I’m not sure I can really trust the guys at my local shop, since they obviously favor the brands they carry, so I’m looking for some good sources of non-biased reviews. I’ve looked at some of the lawn mower reviews on Amazon.com but they don’t carry a lot of the models I’m considering. Where else can I find this kind of information on the internet? I’d prefer reviews written by people who actually use the stuff, not magazines that test them but don’t have real-world experience with them.

There are lots of websites that let people post reviews about all kinds of stuff. Amazon comes to mind, but I’m sure you can find lots of others in Google or another search engine. Just search for “lawn mower reviews” or “brand x model y reviews” – something like that.

Consumer Reports is usually pretty reliable, even though they don’t necessarily use the stuff for very long. I’ve always had good results with the information they post. Your local library probably has back issues where you can find lawn mower reviews.

Why not ask your local repair shop, not somewhere that sells lawn mowers? Repair shops get a lot better idea of what models are having constant problems, since they see them when there’s something wrong.

Yeah, I agree with that last comment. Check with your local repair shop or talk to a technician at the lawn mower store. Slip him $20 to tell you the honest truth about which ones he sees most often.

Google is your friend. Just do some searching on specific brands and model numbers, along with words like reviews or ratings. You’ll probably find lots of sites with reviews for the specific lawn mower you’re researching.

Don’t discount the advice from your local lawn mower shop. Most salespeople are actually pretty honest, and if they sell a model that’s a lemon, they’ll usually tell you. They don’t want the hassle of you coming back and complaining to them every time something goes wrong any more than you want to have stuff go wrong.

Amazon.com is usually a pretty good place to find reviews since they let users post reviews of stuff they’ve bought there. You may not find as many brands covered since it depends if they sell it but I’d check there first.

Don’t most stores like Home Depot, Sears, etc. let people post reviews right on their websites now? I’d check those bigger websites to see what you can find before reading stuff on some site you don’t know.
