Patio Mister Coolness

25 Feb

Posted by Vivan,

Once a garden is planted, you can dramatically increase the number  and size of your flowers by employing techniques known as deadheading, pinching and disbudding.  Removing flowers that are past their prime spurs some plants to flower again.  Snip well down the stem, taking off the entire flower head.  This technique, call deadheading, works well for delphiniums, asters, balloon flowers, lupines and columbines.  Some perennials bloom only once no matter what you do, even so, deadheading is useful as it makes the garden neater and channels the plants’s energy into developing their root systems.  A patio mister for your backyard makes for a cool enjoyment.

4 Tier Mini Greenhouse

05 Feb

Posted by Meg,

Like other greenhouses, a 4 tier mini greenhouse afford the plants within protection from the outside environment. In the spring time, plants grown in a greenhouse receive the added benefit of a warmer average growing temperature, while they remain protected from the cold during the winter. A tiered greenhouse is a bit different from a traditional single level greenhouse in that it actually contains a series of shelves where plants can be placed. Because these structures are typically no larger than a tall bookcase, they can be easily moved and can even be stored completely out of sight when not in use. Another advantage that tiered structures offer is that they are highly affordable, with many priced under $100.

Landscaping raised beds garden is a great idea if your space is limited, or you just want to garden on a smaller scale. In a raised bed you can plant the vegetables that you like the most. Make it so convenient, that when you are cooking or preparing your salads, just step out of your kitchen and take a few vegetables or pinch off a few leaves of this and that and go back in and get ready to eat the freshest vegetables possible. They can not get any fresher than that! If you love herbs, build you a little Herb raised bed garden, and enjoy the best and freshest aroma and flavour you can imagine.

Landscaping Retaining Walls

03 Jan

Posted by Marcy,

There are many, many types of landscaping retaining wall materials available today. Field stone, railroad ties, pressure treated ties, brick, inter-locking masonry block that resembles stone, brick, and so on. The different types require slightly different methods of installation but all have some of the same basic concepts. You must start with good solid soil underneath.

Do not attempt to build on top of topsoil, wet loam or other soft and pliable ground material. Your wall will simply move with the earth and self destruct over time. If you are dealing with topsoil or soft ground, it will be necessary to excavate and remove this soil to a foot or two below ground level, placement of a good sub base gravel or item material, compaction and then build your wall on top of that.

The right shape

11 Dec

Posted by Deetta,

There are many different types of greenhouse on the market and sometimes it can seem almost impossible to make the right decision when you come to buy one, and it is due to this fact that when I decided to replace my greenhouse I went and took some advice from a friend but also from a salesman who works at a local garden center. After listening to the advice and doing quite a bit of research on my own I decided that the best thing for me was to buy a really good Geodesic Dome Greenhouse, because this would fit exactly what I wanted for my garden. It was quite expensive but I can say I really enjoy using it to grow a wide variety of flowers and vegetables. As far as I am concerned that is all that matters.

Planning Paths

01 Dec

Posted by Darlene,

Anything you plant, from annual flowers to Fargesia Rufa Bamboo, must fit in with the natural pathways of your property.  If the shortest way to the vacant lot and corner market is between the rhododendron bushes, you can bet there’ll be a pathway there, used chiefly by kids and dogs, which is only blocked at your plants’ peril.  Where do the kids and dogs travel on your property?  Where are the existing paths?  Which way do most people climb the slope to the upper garden?  Does your front yard have a nice stone pathway that gently curves to a place nobody ever goes, resulting in a bare area on the lawn where everyone takes a shortcut?  Your paths will work best if you use the big, established pathways that people and dogs already use, and design your planting around them.
