A wheelchair lift is a powered device used to assist someone incapacitated in a wheelchair. It will lift the chair over any difficult height or aid in overcoming a particular barrier. Not only does this assist in giving the individual in the chair a greater sense of independence, but it also helps to prevent any further injury that may be sustained in a difficult situation. An example of this would be a van or a bus that has a mobility chair lift installed. Rather than putting people in jeopardy by having to lift a heavy wheelchair into the van, the lift automatically lifts and places the chair safely inside of the van. Though safer and more convenient, many van companies choose to install a wheelchair ramp rather than a lift, because the lift can be a much more costly undertaking.
